Ariel and Marc practice 'framing' during the interviewing workshop

Today at Parkway, Temple Youth Voices joined us and we learned a little about the do's and dont's of interviewing.  The day started off by everyone writing their name and favorite breakfast food on a name tag.  We then gathered into groups.  You were supposed to have people in your group with other breakfast foods...I believe in my group we have chocolate chip muffins, home fries, and bacon, which sounds like a well rounded breakfast to me! :)  Then we found something we had in common with the people in our group.

Students watched the documentary film 'Giving Birth in Prison' to discuss best practices with interviewing and flip cameras

After a little discussion, we moved on to more technical talk: how to use the cameras.  We learned about things like panning and tilting, a what time of shots there were (ie: close up).  We watched a video and talked about the positives and negatives of the video in terms of the things we just learned (Was the camera shaky? Did the interviewer ask good questions?).

After that two students gave us an example of a good interview and a bad interview, which was my favorite part of the day.

The day was over before I knew it and we headed back to Bryn Mawr.  I'm excited for next week, I'm hoping for some more college access activities!  -Sarah Jenness
