Wednesday, October 6th

Class was shortened due to a half day schedule, so we tried to hit the ground running and get as much productive work done in our shortened class time. At the beginning of class, students had a period to free write about the quote, " I am quality, not quantity." On Tuesday, the students spent a majority of the class discussing statistics, including how statistics can impact one's identity. During this free writing period students were allowed the opportunity to express how they viewed themselves as being an individual and unique from a numerical system.

After the free writing period, some of the students shared their journal entries. We then broke up into four smaller groups and discussed how statistics impact students. This discussion took different directions within all the groups from college acceptance and academics to social concerns including teen pregrnancy and the interaction between youth and police, and how these can become unwanted labels.

We found out that the basketball coach from Penn State is interested in Tanisha's sports talent. She is beginning to look into the school and the type of academic and sports opportunities it has to offer her!

Monday, October 4th: Ninja Game & College Research!

Playing the "ninja" game Shelby taught us.

Monday it was really cold in the classroom, so we began the class by playing Shelby's Ninja game.

After we warmed up, we moved down the hall to Mr. Cohen's room and worked on the computers to think about options for college. We broke into four different groups, two college students were helping to lead each group. Most groups spent time looking over the applications for different colleges and we discussed the importance of calling admissions officers with questions about college.

Marc announced that he was going to the Temple University Open House this Saturday, October 9th (http://www.temple.edu/undergrad/visitcampus/fall2010openhouse.htm) it looks like it should be really fun!

Also, Taylor recommended checking out this websites for scholarships: uncf.org

Don't forget to sign up for November 6th SAT or the December 11th ACT (http://www.actstudent.org/regist/dates.html)!!  -Adrienne

Big thanks to Ariel, Katie, Anna, Adrienne, Nell, and Hallie for all their help with our bake/art sale at plenary and around campus on Sunday, October 3rd to raise money for the SSB.

yesterday selling baked goods and artwork! I was tabling in Lusty after Zanny finally went home (bless her heart) and college kids were down for the sweets late into the night! - everyone was pretty sweet too about making donations which was great. Thanks to Nell for baking the brownies and Anna for baking cupcakes. Appreciate the collective effort. Adrienne the art is all on your carol in Canaday and I can help you take it back to the art studio. Most of the sweets were eaten but maybe I can take the leftovers to the CEO or something.

Water damage...

The ceiling right over Shelby's (old) seat
Apparently it's not always sunny in Philadelphia....and our classroom doesn't hold up to well in the rain.

Friday morning we discovered some big leaks where two parts of the ceiling were falling in. We managed to have class in 318 on Friday, but if the forecast of more rain this week is accurate-- we may have to relocate.

Focus on Interviewing & Videography

Ariel and Marc practice 'framing' during the interviewing workshop

Today at Parkway, Temple Youth Voices joined us and we learned a little about the do's and dont's of interviewing.  The day started off by everyone writing their name and favorite breakfast food on a name tag.  We then gathered into groups.  You were supposed to have people in your group with other breakfast foods...I believe in my group we have chocolate chip muffins, home fries, and bacon, which sounds like a well rounded breakfast to me! :)  Then we found something we had in common with the people in our group.

Students watched the documentary film 'Giving Birth in Prison' to discuss best practices with interviewing and flip cameras

After a little discussion, we moved on to more technical talk: how to use the cameras.  We learned about things like panning and tilting, a what time of shots there were (ie: close up).  We watched a video and talked about the positives and negatives of the video in terms of the things we just learned (Was the camera shaky? Did the interviewer ask good questions?).

After that two students gave us an example of a good interview and a bad interview, which was my favorite part of the day.

The day was over before I knew it and we headed back to Bryn Mawr.  I'm excited for next week, I'm hoping for some more college access activities!  -Sarah Jenness

There are no  photos from today's class because it was a talk from an outside group about: "Making College & Career Count."

At the end of the assembly, Myiesha and Nadine talked to their 11th grade English teacher and current guidance counselor,  Ms. Morales, about having her name included on the 'Pioneering Women' mural under "T" for teachers.  Ms. Morales was excited to be included on the mural wall!
